Companies use master data management (MDM) to provide and maintain a consistent view of an organization's core business entities. Typically, this data is scattered across a range of application systems in a variety of different formats. The types of master data vary by industry and organization, but examples include customers, suppliers, products, employees and finances. (Note: MDM for customer data is referred to as customer data integration (CDI), and is discussed in a related Ipedo solution.)

MDM is necessary because each IT system across a company identifies entities differently and tracks different information. Master data management creates a consolidated system of record for each business entity, so users have a single source that is more complete, accurate, and standardized than that of any individual system.

MDM combines data management processes and a collection of technologies to provide entity analysis, data synchronization, data quality, transactional integrity, and other uses. There are several approaches to creating a single system of record, including creating a new data warehouse (data consolidation), creating copies of data in new operational stores (data propagation), and creating virtual views of master data (data federation/EII). The choice of techniques will vary by application, and may combine several approaches, but according to The Data Warehousing Institute, "The trend in master data management is to use federated or virtual styles of data integration." This is because EII allows more flexible integration without the expense and overhead of managing additional data stores.

Ipedo XIP helps companies integrate their master data from across the organization. Whether via federated query over virtual views or in combination with other data integration techniques, Ipedo's broad span of data sources simplifies and speeds development. Using Ipedo's federated style of integration can also reduce data replication and the accompanying cost of maintaining new data stores. In addition, organizations can set up views in Ipedo XIP to customize delivery of needed master data to applications that need it.

Ipedo Benefits
  • Simplify integration from disparate applications and data sources
  • Easily customize and deliver needed subsets of customer data via virtual views
  • Speed performance by minimizing the amount of data persisted centrally
  • Avoid political and organization issues around master data ownership by leaving data where it lies
